iOS 11 on an iPhone.

After playing with this OS for about 24 hours, I've decided it is the bestest so far as far as upgrades and lacking in accessibility bugs so far.
You'll need at least an iPhone 7 to get all the bells and whistels, but if you've got say a 6, you have some settings that will help your phone run a bit smoother.
Many apps have embraced touch ID, and from my experience, some things for me aren't possible without 3D touch.
A couple for example, are With the latest Skype, I can't figure a way to delete old calls and such.
I have the same problem in Facebook messenger.
On my iPhone 7, iOS runs really well although it took some time to get it installed.
I noticed a feature, and it could have been in iOS 10, because I had not really gone through the settings for awhile, that allows you to set how incoming calls are announced.
Not at all, headphones only, and headphones/speaker. I truly do like that, because I don't like everyone knowing who's calling me.
So, you've got my $0.02 on this. What do you think?

Post 2 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 20-Sep-2017 12:52:08

One mistake. You'll not get all the bells and whistles on the iPhone 7, but most of them.
It however runs beautifully.

Post 3 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 20-Sep-2017 22:50:28

On this page you can read about all the new features and settings and descriptions for iOS 11.
It will be updated they say.
To skip, because it also talks about iPad and such, use the letter H. It is marked by headings, so nice.
This is not a link. You'll need to copy it and paste it.

the call routing thing was around in at least one earlier version, yes. I have noticed a bit of voiceover lag with iOS 11, which I hope will be addressed in a future release. There seems to be some lag between opening a folder and voiceover announcing it was open, and there seems to be a lag with closing it as well. I also don't like how a few things were set up on the actions roder, and one of the things that annoys me most of all is that they took away the action to get into editing mode on the home screen, and made it double tap with one finger and hold again to get into the editing mode, which causes issues with people that have motor impairments. I'd like to see that action option brought back.

I love how human the new siri voices sound though, and enjoy quite a lot the ability to drag multiple items across a screen. I also like the files app, I think that kind of feature has been long overdo, and enjoy getting Siri to translate phrases for me. I can't wait to see more languages added to that feature, and can't wait until more app developers start taking advantage of Siri too. A lot of untapped potential there, which is mostly Apple's fault.

Post 5 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 11:34:22

I find iOS11 a bit sluggish on my iPhone 6 but I expected this. I've ordered an 8 from my carrier, my typical upgrade every three years.
I anticipate when it gets here, I'll be able to put in the SIM card and set it up myself just as I have other iPhone releases in the past.
I really like the Siri female voice, but I think it's a bit hard on the 6 to use it as a Voiceover voice, much as I do like it.

Post 6 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 12:12:42

The lag is most likely not a lag, but things happening on your screen you don't see.
It has lots of new animations and such that go on.
Totally unnecessary for us, but.
Laughing.
These can be disabled, and that will speed you up again.
Do a search for ways to speed up your iPhone with iOS11. I don't have that page handy, but you'll find it.
I noticed the lag when I first open something, but after that, it seems to smooth out.
They suggest a reboot to after installing to put things right.
These changes will help on that 6 as well.

Post 7 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 12:20:20

Here's one page that discusses the changes that will help.

Post 8 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 13:04:56

Thanks. You know I have set some of those before, but the new OS update must have changed them back. I'm talking the reduce motion and transparency stuff. Seems to have improved things.
Still looking forward to the iPhone 8 getting here though. It's got a better CPU than the 7 from whjat I read. It's just the horsepower and wireless charging is really why I got it.
Hopefully it can sit flat on the table, unlike the 6 where the camera is kind of a bump on the back, which is different from earlier phone models.

Post 9 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 14:26:24

Of course this post is my personal opinion, but this here is something I always enjoy doing.
When I update, I only transfer iCloud info to my phone and then go play.
Laughing.
Being you are coming from the 6 to the 8, you might enjoy that much.
Now, I've just lied some, because being the iOS11 isn't adding any new apps it seems, I'm going to load my current settings on the 8 and not play so much.
Lastly, this is a day late and a dollar short, but some users, especially braille users might not want to update just yet.
Read this article.

I like that you can reverse the braille panning keys in iOS 11.

In mail, when scrolling through messages I've found sometimes my messages are scrolled to far. Meaning, I get to message from 2016 ETc. I have learn to close mail under the app switcher and open mail again. Al is well after that, I'll leave feedback with apple tomorrow.

Post 14 by starfly (99956) on Thursday, 21-Sep-2017 22:43:25

Also, from a sighted point of view, my wife found IOS 11 visually appealing and seems to like the upgrade a lot.

My only real complaint is about the 'Scan Documents' feature in the notes app.
I really thought it would work like a OCR scan but it scans documents as a
photo. I was hoping to use this feature to scan handouts on the fly, in class or
otherwise but nope. Oh well. Hopefully they will fix this, other wise I'm gonna
have to fork out the money for KNFB Reader, which I really really don't want to
do.

Aside from this, my iPhone 7 plus is running a lot smoother and not slowed
down at all.

Post 16 by season (the invisible soul) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 5:46:24

if you are still holding on to the iOS11 upgrade, is worth checking out this post on applevis before decide either you want to upgrade it to ios11 or not.

I have to say I am a huge fan of this upgrade so far. A tiny thing but the customizable control center is my favourite feature so far.

Post 18 by lalady (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 11:30:38

Just curious. Has anyone installed IOS11 on the 5s yet? Apple tells me that it should work just fine, but I'm still leery of doing it. Holding out until I get some feedback on how it really interfaces with the 5s.

Post 19 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 12:20:17

Cali, there are other scanning applications that work on par with or in some cases better than the KNFB reader in a pinch. Depending on your needs, Identifi, Seeing AI, Prismo GO Voice (which may need to be updated for IOS 11) and OCR pro

As for IOS 11, I like the design and features, but though I've been running the beta since the beginning, I'm still underwhelmed by the performance on my 6S Plus. Lots of random crashing, and it's a mite sluggish at times. Might try some of the suggestions though. Can't afford the 8+ or the X aaaaanytime soon. Thanks Canadian cell phone companies for having expensive and vastly underwelming data plans.

Post 20 by boots and denim (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 13:30:02

Remy, I'm aware of other scanning software but to my understanding, KNFB
reader is the only one that allows you to save documents - which is necessary
for me.

I believe Microsofts act will let you do that too.

You that update older phones must remember, all these fancy features being talked about here may not be available to you.
The softwear will cater to your model.

Post 23 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 17:40:32

iOS11 is very much faster on my new iPhone 8 than it was on my 6. I just got the 8 today, faster than I anticipated, and it's now up and running.

Post 24 by ArtRock1224 (move over school!) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 17:49:31

While the new Siri voice might not be ideal for day-to-day use with VoiceOver, it's fantastic for reading Kindle and iBooks. If you add it to language options in your rotor, you instantly have a high-quality TTS voice to read books and other documents.

Post 25 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Friday, 22-Sep-2017 22:50:29

I'm not really surprised that you got it today. These phones did not go out of stock with preorders, since a lot of folks are holding out for the X. So, pretty much anyone who preordered the 8 or 8+ that I know of got them today.

Post 26 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 23-Sep-2017 9:49:16

True enough. I got mine on time, but I usually do if I preorder at the top of the open window.
I would say it is even smoother then my previous 7, and with the small amount of vision I have, I can tell the screens better.
It simply handles the features, and such better, but then I guess it better.
No surprises there.
Laughing.

Post 27 by season (the invisible soul) on Saturday, 23-Sep-2017 22:54:43

wayne, what do you like about the 8 and what don't you like about the 8?

Post 28 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 24-Sep-2017 12:01:56

The damn price. I mean, I've been buying these things for years. You'd think Apple would simply give you one free after so many, right?
Laughing.
I don't find anything to dislike. It is a better 7 iPhone is the best way to describe it.
The new processor makes everything work better, so depending on your needs or the things you use a phone for, the 8 is a nice choice.
You don't even need to buy a new case. Your cases from say an iPhone 6S will do is you don't mind the extra earphone jacks opening at the bottom.

Post 29 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 24-Sep-2017 12:16:44

Also, wireless charging is a plus for me while at home.
No need to figure hout how long your cables need to be or whatever to charge and use the device at the same time.
Simply set it on the pad, and it goes. If you need it in the night, you pick it up, and use it easy.
Its a handy feature.
It can be added with a case to other models, but having it right on the phone is nice, and I believe will be great once places start offering more pads on site.

Post 30 by hardyboy09 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 25-Sep-2017 1:16:12

Hi all,

I purchased the 8+ through my carrier, and I have to say that this phone as far as hardware is concerned, has the best in the land at present. At present, benchmarks conducted by me and Geek Bench 4 indicate a single core score at almost 5,000 and a multicore score of almost 10,000, rivaling even core I7 processors. Even if you have a 7+, you will notice a drastic speed boost. For anyone interested, the iphone 6s+ has a 1.85 GHZ CPU, and the 8+ and 10 have a 2.06 GHZ CPU across 6 cores. IOS 11 runs smoothly on an 8+. VoiceOver runs the best it ever has in my opinion. It also seems that the battery is much improved, or the new CPU is very much more power efficient.

Nathan.

Post 31 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 25-Sep-2017 17:07:51

The battery is actually smaller then a 7.
I've been working mine to get all my stuff on, so once things settle down, I'm interested to see if the battery actually last the same as Apple claims.

Not working well on my 5s, at least not with braille.

Post 33 by hopeburnsblue (http://hopeburnsblue.deviantart.com) on Monday, 25-Sep-2017 21:43:09

So I'm liking a lot of the new features ... Messages seems to act up a lot, but a restart and quick hide of all the extra media options seemed to help. Has anyone noticed that image descriptions seem to have gone away? The first article Wayne linked to boasts about them as if they're a new feature; I noticed the descriptions in iOS 10, I think, and they were brief, but now, entering my Photos app, it's back to telling me just dates, photo quality, and portrait versus landscape orientation. What am I missing here?

Post 34 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 12:25:29

Make sure your screen curtin is off. I g"uess may"be brightness helps too weirdly enough. According to an applevis blog on Hi Sierra anyway.

Post 35 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 14:37:21

How do you hide the extra options in Messages? I might like to do that, especially after some booze or some bud, trying to find th text field can be tricky with all this extra stuff.

Post 36 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 15:20:53

There's now an iOS11.0.1 which I just updated my iPhone 8 to.
We'll see how it goes, the one bug in Messages where it says "null" for the item you deleted is still there, but I am probably like Wayne is when it comes to living with this stuff.

Post 37 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 15:24:46

I reinstalled my mail to solve that problem.
I had deleted some mail, but it never left, so I removed my account, and put it back.
I've not installed the newest however.
Will do so.

Post 38 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 17:34:24

This doesn't happen in Mail, but in text messages. It's all good, I rarely delete messages ... I don't get messages from many people so it's all good. Betting they fix that before the next update due in November or so.

Would someone be able to tell me how to disable the reading of tables in E-mails and such? I feel like a baby on the freeway with this new IIOS. Thanks.

Post 41 by hopeburnsblue (http://hopeburnsblue.deviantart.com) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 19:58:41

So the text message issue happens to me in general-typically when I've deleted a message, but not always. Sometimes it does the null thing, and sometimes it makes me think I've tapped on one conversation when I meant to select the other. I sent a text to the wrong person yesterday because of that, but it was a benign message, so whatever.
As the article Wayne shared suggests, deleting messages using the Edit feature, rather than the Actions Menu in the rotor, seems to help with that. Closing and reopening Messages also helps, and there's also something to be said for restarting your phone if the issue still persists.
So under the edit box, there are of course a number of buttons for the app integrations. When you hear VoiceOver say "More," go ahead and tap that. It's basically like a version of the rotor settings wherein you can pick and choose which app integrations are displayed. You'd tap "Edit" once you're there and just tap the options you don't want to show. It doesn't get rid of all of them, but it certainly does help.

Post 42 by luckyluc20 (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2017 19:59:10

Okay, I figured out how to turn off the reading of tables. Sorry for panicking so quickly.

I'm still good on the messages. Mine works as usual and I've got the update running now.

Post 44 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Wednesday, 27-Sep-2017 13:28:20

I don't suppose there's a way to downgrade?

Post 45 by lalady (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 27-Sep-2017 17:00:12

Probably not. But Apple told me that if I had a problem after installing IOS11 on my 5s to call their accessibility line at 877-204-3930. Most likely they will make you an appointment to go into the Apple store nearest your home to fix the problem at no charge to you. The accessibility desk has helped me in several situations with my 5s. I have decided not to install IOS11 on my 5s. My phone is only 5 months old, basicly new and works great with the last update I did several months ago. Good luck.

Post 46 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 27-Sep-2017 17:19:40

Post 50 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 7:57:08

I put iOS 11 on my 6S when I had it. It was sluggish for the first day or so, and I thought it was the phone itself. I later figured out it was because there were still a crapload of updates being done in the background that I didn't know were going. After about the first 24 hours, my 6S ran as normal again. However, since I was eligible for the upgrade, I did get the iPhone 8. So far, I like it. The iOS does run a bit faster on there. I'm still adjusting from the sound of the one speaker in the 6S to the two in the 8. I know users of the 7 probably wouldn't think much of this, because you'd be used to it, but it sounds very different to me, and I'm not entirely sure I like it yet.

The deleting text message threads issue is a known bug. To fix it, I have to close out and reopen my messages app. I do wish there were a way to hide all those additional options in messages that iOS 11 has, but I haven't figured it out. If anyone knows, can you explain?

Probably my biggest complaint about the new iOS is the do not disturb while driving feature. It pops up a notification about turning it on every damn time I'm in a car of any kind. I thought putting it on manual activation would stop this, and indeed others have told me it would, but it has not. I still get them every time. Does anyone have any ideas about how to stop that, besides putting it on manual activation, which is already done?

Post 51 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 13:00:40

To use the extra features in the messing app.
Instead of tapping on the iMessage, tap the messing app.
Now across the bottom, you'll find music, pictures, Pandora, I've got Starbucks, like that.
If your receiver has say Apple music, you can send them the song you were listening to.
I'm not sure if they even need to be on Apple music, because I've had music sent to me from people with Android Galaxy S8 and it worked in my Apple music.
I've not seen the other side of my text. Probably best too.
Laughing.
You can send a Starbucks gift card, or a playlist from Pandora if you are a subscriber.
Its kind of fun.
I never could make it work well with iOS 10, but its slick in 11.
I did see that driving thing, but was to busy to figure out why it came up.
It just is saying the features available, so maybe turning off tips will do it.
I've not ridden in a car since, so will need to do so and see if I've got any ideas on it myself.

Post 52 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 13:04:31

I updated to iOS11.0.1 and those extra features in Messages are hidden or out of the way.
So far so good.

Post 53 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 14:09:26

Imp, you can downgrade. There's currently a topic on Applevis about this displayed prominently on the main page.

Post 54 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 28-Sep-2017 14:52:13

Also about these extra features.
There is a way to turn them off so they don't show, but I'll need to look it up again.
I like mine, so.
Laughing.
Anyway, anytime you open a message to talk, if you go to the bottom of the screen, you'll find the options cross the bottom.
If I'm correct, some features are available depending on the apps you have.
Example, I have Starbucks, so have a Starbucks deal that allows me to send that gift card.
Now, again, if you don't want to see this, tap the iMessage and it goes away. Tap the messaging app to find them
On these extra speakcers.
They are not at the bottom of the phone.
One is were it was, bottom right side, but the other is actually the earpiece.
So to get the best effect, holding your phone in landscape makes them both sound better.
They designed it that way, because videos and such show in landscape, so you get a stereo sound.
Word to the wise, be carful clapping the phone to your ear if you were using the speaker. It is really loud.
Also watch out when lifting the phone back up if you put it down for a seconde.
Ouch.
The earpiece is the speaker, so.
It was a bit of a problem on the 7 until they updated 10 at first.
Had to be careful.

hahaha Wayne, unless you promise to pre-order and pay it for me for the x, if not, aint gonna happen. Since they bringing out the x as 5.8" phone, i wish they have a version for 5.2" or 5". the 5.5" plus is little too big, and the 4.7 is little too small. but then, i got the tiny 4" SE as a secondary phone for when i'm traveling etc. i don;'t think i'll upgrade my SE from ios10 to 11 though. compare to 6s+, the SE is a little slow than what i like for ios10, and i dont think it will be any faster on 11. BTW, do they have spotify on the message app as one of the option? that will be cool.

Post 56 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 29-Sep-2017 9:56:50

Might help.
If you picked your phone up from the store, try a full reset and see what you get.
For us, this is best done if you've got a computer handy, but can be done with you and the phone too.
Once it comes back, press the home button 3 times to get it to holler, and then you've got glasses.
Laughing.
I did my own setup. I can't say, but I wonder if that will help.

Post 59 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 02-Oct-2017 10:01:20

So, okay, iOS 11 does eat battery.
I thought so, but wasn't sure if it just wasn't me.
All that fancy stuff running in the background you know.
So, you can decide to not have it,and shut down your fancy, or put your phone in a battery case, covering up the pretty, or something.
Decissions, decisions.

In that section, you can turn off any you don't want to see.

But, if a person didn't set it up, Apple, or the cellular provider they received the phone from just does everything generally.
They leave all the bells, whistles, and minor bothers active so you can see what your phone can do for you, or to you.
Laughing.
So, again, under notifications, you'll find tips, tap it out.
As to Apple pay, I totally agree, it is just the way to do it when you can.
Not only do you have the luxury of putting several payment sources in, you are protected from theeves scanning your cards or whatever skemes they've got going now.
Sure, your banks will help you, but that's if you catch it.
But, every ones different, so to make that go away go to your wallet and Apple pay.
Under that you'll find allow payments from this device, or something like that.
Tap it off.

And now folks, we are up to iOS11.3, so maybe they've gotten lots of the buggers out.

Post 65 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 05-Oct-2017 13:50:04

Also hopeburnsblue, even when we set our phones up, or reload all our perfect settings, a new OS comes along, and I personally find, I've got to go fishing to fix things I don't like.
Saying that, I guess it doesn't matter who did it.
Laughing.
One of my peeves is iOS 11 chatters to much when I'm texting.
That's a Verbosity setting I found that I could turn off.
Now I'm back to normal texing without all that direction.
So, you'll be a while in that perfect device I'll wager.

What's the text chattering all about? Just curious and how you solved that.
And thanks for the Tips thing, I just didn't think of notifications.
It wants me to update to 11.0.2 so I'm doing that. Maybe yours is already 11.0.3? I'm on an 8, not an 8+. Meaning I don't have the plus-size phone.

Sorry, I did mean 11.2 not 3.
All phones get the same OS, and I have a regular 8 as well.
That plus is to much screen real estate for me.

I remember switching from the 5S to the 6 with the new 4.7 inch screen, and it took me a week to get use to finding stuff.
Laughing.
The chatter is about spelling corrections and such if you pause on a letter to long.
Normally it just gives you the letters name like A alpha. Other things like tap twice to open.
I don't need all that direction, so go to settings, accessibility, voice over, then Verbosity .
The first thing is on, turn that off and you'll not have all the directing about what to do if you don't require that anymore.
It was okay before on, but now it gives you even more help, a good thing for some.
I'm giving this off the top of my head, but you'll understand when you do it.

Thanks. When it starts bothering me, I'll go there. Again, thanks.

For the person that hates tips.
I forgot, with the latest, and you have it, you can not only turn it off, but delete it too.
Go to settings, general, iPhone storage, and find any offending app you dislike, or that is taking up your prime storage space, and remove it.
You click on the name and you'll see the remove on the ones you can.

Oh wow, thats so cool. Means now you can remove apps like stock and Game Center?
Bring it on.

Post 71 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 11-Oct-2017 11:48:24

Sure.
I removed Game center a long time ago, so it wasn't on my 8.
Some apps you need, but many you never use, so why keep them taking up space?
It also removes the documentation and such that come with them.

Post 72 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 12-Oct-2017 16:32:05

You know, I can't see game center as a regular app when I removed it, but under settings, it remains there so you can reset it up.
It doesn't show under iPhone storage either, so it is one of these things that comes with the OS I suppose.
The games, if you've got some sight however are going to be really something with the new stuff they've got happening.

Apple's kicking out the updates fast this season. Maybe this one has the charm?
3S the charm, right?
Laughing.
